Beauty of Conero Area
|
 |
Monte Conero,
which is 572 metres high and drops down sheer
to the sea, is the only genuine interruption to the otherwise flat coast
which winds its way through the northern lidos up to the Gargano.
Thanks to the gentle and varied morphology of the area
the Conero River
offers a variety of very different settings,
while the beaches which may be reached respond to
the differing needs of visitors seeking a varied landscape.
Thus those who appreciate the tranquillity of the rocky coast will
find their natural habitat relaxing in the picturesque
bays of Due Sorelle,
Sassi Neri or Mezzavalle,
places which time does not appear to have touched;
those who prefer a more "social" and animated beach life
can direct their attention to the stretch of coast which
goes from lower Numana up to Marcelli,
where well-equipped beaches everywhere satisfy
the desire for comfort and entertainment for adults and children. |

Il Parco del Conero:
: it is the only prominence (572 m.) beetling on the sea from Trieste to Gargano, dealing with Ancona and Camerano, and with the bathing centres of Sirolo and Numana, Monte Cònero is the core of the homonym Regional Park. Founded in 1987, but managed only from 1991, Parco del Cònero is an environmentalist oasis which extends for over 5800 hectares of protected area. There are places of big impression: the bay of Portonovo, “Due sorelle” beach, Belvedere nord, Pian Grande, Pian dei Raggetti and so on… Eighteen excursion routes that snakes between wild strawberries trees, broom bushes, holmes, pine trees, in the magic atmosphere of the Mediterranean maquis. Several species of birds reside here, some of them rare, together with an abundant faunal presence??.
The most of the plants which form the Mediterranean maquis are here protected and represent a third of the entire floral heritage of the region. A lot of testimonies of art: Santa Maria di Portonovo, San Pietro al Cònero, the Antiquarium on Picenum culture in Numana, together with geologic routes of peculiar interest.

Sirolo
|
 |
This lovely medioeval town, linked with the mountain and its traditions, is from the artistic and natural point of view one of the most beautiful resorts of the Riviera: that's why it's known as the Conero's Jewel.
A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY AND ART
Already civilized during the paleolithic, the territory of Sirolo is conquered by the Piceni, the population which founded also Ancona; their presence is testified by interesting remains located at the
archeologic
area "i pini". In the Middle Age it became an
invincible fortress,
in order to defend itself from barbarians and
pirates: the actual layout of alleys and suggestive
small streets comes from this period. |
 |
 |
|
During the 11th century, the town was a fief of
Cortesi Count, nobles of franco-german origin: in
this period, they donated to the Benedettini friars
the church of Saint
Peter. Then the fief
turned into Papal possession; the Curch's domination
pushed the construction of new churces, like the
church of San Nicolò
and of the Rosario.
Also the three notable
villas,
all private and not visitable, have to be mentioned.
The inhabitants of Sirolo (3200) are well proud of
their history, of Monte Conero and of the old
traditions of their city. They welcome visitors with
a series of valid initiatives, first of all the
summer theatre program
called "Teatro alle Cave", the setting being old
caves in Monte Conero. |
The symbol of the town is the "branzino", a fish living in these clear sea waters.
Between nature and
landscapes. Wild
beaches, steep cliffs, caves, white rocks covered by pinewood overlooking deep and transparent seawater, make of Sirolo the ideal place to discover a still uncontaminated nature. The tidy medieval centre, sunny and windy, is sheltered by the green promontory of Monte Conero and it is surrounded by a sea rich in fishes and hills cultivated with wheat, olive and grapes. |

The unique landscape can be appreciated from the
balcony-main square,
the very heart of summer life, with many different
open-air parlours where you can enjoy ice-cream. |
Numana
|
 |
Numana is a shelter where to relax and have fun, in a dream-alike environment.
A little bit of history and art:
Ancient port of Piceni tribe (remains of this period are preserved in the Antiquarium), Numana was included in the Athens routes from the Vth century, becoming a famous market and a trade center to sort Greek goods out, towards the inland and the middle Adriatic sea. Roman colony and then "Municipium", fall down in the Middle Age because of earthquakes and sacks. In the 15th century was under Ancona Bishop Government. In the last ages, from humble fishermen village is got a modern vacation centre, preserving a good balance with the historical part. Numana is also one of the most equipped port for sailing and boating. Town's symbols are the Tower, a monument which origins are unknown still today, and the Costarella, a popular alley getting in summer a natural setting for pictorial exposition. |
 |
 |
Mention must go also to the Sanctuary of the
Crucifix, preserving a legendary wooden crucifix.
Between nature and landscapes:
Numana is in the heart of the Conero Mountain Park. The inhabits divides it into two sections: Numana Alta (upper) the oldest part of the town lies on the hill, and Numana Bassa (lower), the more recent part of it, which includes the port and the cost until the ward of Marcelli. The beach is gravel to the north of the port and is sand, wide and more easily accessible in the south of it. From the green gardens it's possible to have a stunning view of the landscape, as much as from the other view-point, the balcony of the tower. Pocket handerchief fields and Mediterranean underwoods spread beside the coast. The Conero mountain frames this suggestive landscape. |
